1 - Reaching Out and Reaching In
This podcast is the first in a five-part series about sailboat race starting strategies. Watch an example of "
Reaching out and Reaching In", a classic starting strategy used successfully in club races every weekend.
There is no magical starting technique that will be successful in every condition, and every sized fleet. That's why it's important to practice several different approaches so that you can meld and adapt them on the fly during the high paced excitement at the start.
This podcast series analyzes actual sailboat race starts to see what worked, and what didn’t. The first episode focuses on a simple strategy that is easy to execute. You simply reach away from the starting line for one minute, and back for one minute. It’s easy to adjust if you are a bit slow, or a bit fast, and it doesn’t require a precise sense of time and distance to execute well. This “reaching in and reaching out” approach is very forgiving, and works best in small, friendly fleets.
