ANALYTICS: UNDERSTANDING THE GROOVE ANALYSIS
The groove analysis is a graphic representation of an algorithim that evaluates boat handling and course stability. The groove analysis, or GA, appears as straight colored lines, roughly in line with the course of the boat. Where the lines are solid, the boat was "in the groove", and boat handling was steady. Where there is a gap in the line, and just blank water, the boat handling was poor, and the course unsteady. Click the GA lines to receive the Course, Speed, and VMG for each segment.
WHY IS MY BOAT AVATAR STEADY, WHILE OTHER AVATARS ARE MORE ANIMATED?
If you mount your phone, your phone will record more data that will animate your 3D avatar. If your phone is unmounted, your avatar will default to sail flat and steady.
What extra data do I get if I “mount” my phone?
Mounting is entirely optional. You will always see the same GPS track, and the same 3D boat avatar sailing around on Google Maps. When the device has been mounted, your 3D avatar will be more active as your sails adjust to the correct point of sail, make gybes and tack. With mounted data, you will also be able to see the wind direction, and your calculated drift vector.
How does the app knows the wind direction, and can I change the wind direction?
The app detects the wind direction based on your tacking patterns. You can change the wind direction for each leg by selecting the leg in the race course setup page list.
